Description
Pegvisomant
Also known as: Somavert
Pegvisomant is a modified version of growth hormone that binds to growth hormone receptors but inhibits their activation and subsequent signaling. Rather than reducing the secretion of growth hormone, it works by directly interfering with its activity, which helps bring IGF-1 levels back to normal.
• A growth hormone receptor antagonist that inhibits the effects of growth hormone. It is prescribed for acromegaly in cases where surgery and somatostatin analogs have not successfully normalized IGF-1 levels.
• Status: Approved by the FDA. Evidence level: Based on FDA approval.
• Usual dosage: 10 to 30 mg per day, administered once daily via subcutaneous injection.
• Investigated uses: Treatment of acromegaly, suppression of growth hormone activity, and normalization of IGF-1.
