Description
Octreotide
Also known as: Sandostatin, Octreotide LAR
Octreotide is a peptide that attaches to somatostatin receptors, particularly SST2 and SST5, thereby suppressing the secretion of growth hormone, glucagon, insulin, and various gastrointestinal hormones. It slows down gastrointestinal motility and reduces digestive secretions. Additionally, it exhibits antitumor activity, especially in neuroendocrine tumors.
• A lab-made version of somatostatin that suppresses the release of several hormones. It is prescribed for acromegaly, carcinoid tumors, and certain gastrointestinal disorders.
• Approved by the FDA, with evidence supporting its approved status.
• Standard dosage ranges from 100 to 500 mcg, administered subcutaneously two to three times daily, or as a long-acting release (LAR) formulation once monthly. Available in both subcutaneous and intramuscular depot forms.
• Investigated primarily for the treatment of acromegaly, carcinoid tumors, and conditions involving hormonal imbalances.
