Melanotan I (Afamelanotide) is a synthetic version of α-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (α-MSH), primarily studied for its role in promoting melanin synthesis within the skin. It has drawn scientific attention for its involvement in skin pigmentation, pathways related to UV protection, and research into photoprotection. Unlike Melanotan II, Melanotan I shows greater selectivity for melanocortin receptors linked specifically to pigmentation, making it a focus of investigation for producing longer-lasting tanning effects with a lower likelihood of unintended biological actions.
