Ziconotide is a potent pain-relieving peptide originally isolated from the venom of the marine cone snail Conus magus. It functions by selectively blocking N-type calcium channels, thereby inhibiting the transmission of pain signals in the spinal cord. As a non-opioid and non-addictive agent, it offers an alternative to traditional pain medications, though its use is generally limited to severe, chronic pain conditions unresponsive to other therapies due to its high potency. In clinical practice, it is available under the brand name Prialt® and must be delivered directly into the spinal fluid via intrathecal infusion, as it is poorly absorbed when taken orally and has a narrow therapeutic range.
